Nutrir, is a private non-profit organization established in Manizales, Colombia in 1986. Twenty years later, on December 6, 2005, Barranquilla created its own headquarters, with legal recognition and administrative autonomy, under regulations provided by law.
We work with the poorest, most vulnerable and defenseless child population in programs of nutritional recovery, in order to prevent irreversible developmental delays in children.
We feed pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and malnourished or under risk children from 1 to 14 years old, every day of the year, without consideration of the school calendar. All the beneficiaries are in 1 and 2 social economic levels that correspond to the most vulnerable sectors and which, according to statistical data, represent up to 60% of the Colombian population.
In 2005 the Colombian Welfare Institute carried out a nutritional study of our children and found that, between the ages of 0 to 5, 12% showed a delay in their development due to malnourishment and 33.2% was suffering of anemia. Between the ages of 5 to 9 there is delay in the growth of 12.6% of the children and in children between 10 to 16 y this total increases to 16.2%. The same study showed that 91.1% of babies up to 2 months are breastfed; however, for children over 2 months, the statistic decreases to 50%.
In the Atlantic Coast the deficit of Vitamin A totals 14%, while in the rest of Colombia the deficit is only 5.9%. The investigation showed that the lack of nourishment for our children is 40.8% while severe malnutrition is 3.5%. These figures force and motivate us to look for resources that will help us decrease this malnourishment and the physical and intellectual delay in the development of our children.
