What do we do in Nutrir?

In the year 2008, 150 children and 20 pregnant and breastfeeding mothers of the Santa Maria Neighborhood that were malnourished have entered into our program.
In an agreement carried out in the month of February with the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF for its Spanish acronym) we opened the doors of a new cafeteria in the La Pradera Neighborhood, serving 120 children of the Berea School, offering them a fortified breakfast.
Last April 14, 2008, in alliance with the Foundation “Soccer with a heart” at the La Paz neighborhood in Barranquilla (marginalized neighborhood of the lowest social economic level) we inaugurated a third cafeteria for 300 children that are part of their Soccer School program.
In the month of May we opened a fourth cafeteria located in the Brisas del Rio School, Barlovento neighborhood. At this institution we carried out a nutritional assessment to detect the most severe cases of malnutrition and provide immediate attention and fulfillment of their needs. At present, we are serving a population of 200 children and plan to increase our coverage to the 700 children that attend this school which present a high nutritional deficit and high social-psychological risk.
As an essential condition for the children to become part of the programs that we carry out outside of the schools, the parents are requested to enroll the children in a school so that they will all attend school and be able to receive adequate education and nutrition.
Once the child is in the program, we carry out nutritional, medical and psychological-social diagnosis. Nutritional monitoring is carried out by our nutritional experts every four months to verify children’s progress. Social monitoring is carried out by volunteer psychologists and social workers that identify the conditions under which the children are living and the socio-psychological situation of the home.
Thanks to the support of some institutions in Barranquilla, medical evaluations are offered to children in health brigades, where we provide vaccines, health prevention, treatment for internal parasites and dental services.
We offer shops in handcrafts to the mothers of the families so that they can become productive persons inside their home and therefore improve their quality of life.
In this manner, we are able to provide comprehensive attention to the low income children and thus allow them to have a healthy and dignified life, with a less uncertain future, so they may become a person that will benefit society in the future.
For the foundation, every child is an important human being, and therefore, they receive affectionate, cordial, professional and loving treatment, especially on their birthdays, which we celebrate at the institution.
